I once quoted ‘Seven Nation Army’ in a jazz trombone solo

RIP White Stripes. Jack and Meg White have called it quits:

“The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health,” a statement announced. “It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”

I’m not really shocked by this. They haven’t released an album in 3 years and Jack White is always working with other bands and musicians (I just caught him on Conan backing up Wanda Jackson).  The White Stripes had a good 13 year run, there’s no shame with ending it 2007’s Icky Thump (I haven’t listened to their final, live release Under Great White Northern Lights). Not every band needs to keep going continually.  If they feel things have run their course, well, good for them.  Job well done.

While I’d call myself a White Stripes fan, I’ve only really listened to their latter albums (mostly Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan).  I saw them just once and it was at Bonnaroo, which I wouldn’t exactly call the optimal setting for their music.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the Bonnaroo experience (and Jack and Meg kicked some major ass- though I have yet to find a good recording of it), but there’s something just off about seeing White Stripes on a sunny afternoon surrounded by hippies.

That doc about the Northern Lights tour was pretty cool.
