Fool me four times, shame on all of us

(If you can’t tell, this post isn’t about the Cavs or Cleveland sports).

I, for one, am shocked (shocked, I say!) that the guy who made misleading ACORN videos (causing ACORN to be defunded), who was arrested for trying to tap Louisiana Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu’s phone and tried lure a female CNN correspondent into a “pleasure palace” filled with sex toys, wasn’t entirely truthful with his undercover NPR video (which only got two people fired).

From Dave Weigal at Slate:

The tape released on Tuesday morning gave us this conversation, which starts after a visible (i.e., not concealed) edit.

SCHILLER: … think the current Republican party is not really the Republican Party. It’s been hijacked by this group that…

“MUSLIM”: The radical, racist, Islamophobic, Tea Party people?

SCHILLER: Exactly. And not just Islamophobic, but really xenophobic. Basically, they believe in white, middle America, gun-toting — I mean, it’s pretty scary. They’re seriously racist, racist people. The Blaze grabs the entire exchange, before the edit, from the video that was made available by Project Veritas on Tuesday — hours before Schiller sped up his retirement, and resigned. I’ve bolded the part that was cut.

4 Racist tea Party from Naked Emperor News on Vimeo.

SCHILLER: I won’t break a confidence, but a person who was an ambassador — so, a very highly placed Republican — another person, who was one of the top donors to the Republican party, they both told me they voted for Obama, which they never believed they could ever do in their lives. That they could ever vote for a Democrat, ever. And they did, because they think the current Republican party is not really the Republican Party.

Now, it is not unheard of for people, in conversation, to quote other people saying things they believe to provide a little cover. What do we know about these two Republicans? Nothing. But we know that Schiller was paraphrasing other people when he said the Republican Party had been “hijacked,” and — after being encouraged by the stinger — when he said that it was “xenophobic.”

Oh, and there was also a 30 second glitch in the audio.

I understand the concept of providing balance in news coverage. I really do. But please point me to the liberal version of James O’Keefe. I know Michael Moore is the worst person ever (not to mention fat!) but when that guy says crazy shit… it just happens to be truthful crazy shit. I don’t understand why we care what this guy says or does.

It kills me that stuff like O’Keefe (like with Shirley Sherrod and Planned Parenthood) actually works. A guy or organization with a history of making misleading, untruthful videos releases another video of someone in a ‘liberal’ organization saying something incendiary and suddenly people are losing their jobs. As Greg Sargent tweeted:

Crazy thought: When someone w/track record of deceptive editing releases edited video, there’s outside chance it might be deceptive.

The lesson that to take away from all of this? Keep doing it. It doesn’t matter if you lie or make shit up the liberal organization you’re targeting will fire whoever they need to make it go away. There’ll be no pushback. As John Cole (proprietor of my favorite daily read, Balloon-Juice) says:

NPR’s CEO has resigned. This approach of bending over and taking it every time you upset the wingnuts is proving to be really successful.

Ugh.
